Why Your IP Address Is Visible When Downloading

When you download a file from any website — including FastDDL — the server sees your IP address. This isn't optional; it's how the internet works. The server needs to know where to send the file.

FastDDL is different because we show this information publicly rather than hiding it. Here's why, and what you can do about it.

What your IP address reveals

An IP address doesn't give your exact street address, but it reveals:

  • Your approximate location (city/region, within a few kilometers)
  • Your Internet Service Provider (ISP)
  • Whether you're on a mobile network or residential connection
  • Whether you're using a VPN or proxy (datacenter IPs are detectable)

Why FastDDL displays IP addresses publicly

Most file sharing services log IP addresses silently. FastDDL displays them on the file page for two reasons:

1. Transparency: You deserve to know what data is collected. If we log your IP, we show it to you — and everyone else who visits the file page.

2. Accountability: If someone downloads a file, their IP is visible to the uploader and other visitors. This deters abuse and creates a public record of access.

How to hide your IP address

If you don't want your real IP visible when downloading:

  • Use a VPN: Routes your traffic through a different server. We recommend Proton VPN for privacy.
  • Use Tor: Free, anonymous browsing through the Tor network. Slower but highly anonymous.
  • Use a proxy: Lighter than a VPN but less secure. See our free proxy list on the Tools page.

Test it yourself

FastDDL's homepage shows you exactly what data is collected in real-time — your IP, country, ISP, browser fingerprint, and more. Upload a file, download it, and check the visitor log to see what's recorded. Then try the same with a VPN and watch your IP change.

This hands-on experience is the best way to understand digital privacy — and FastDDL is built to teach it.
